New web directory are now rampant and being created heavily in the internet world today. There are lots of directory scripts being offered for either free or paid version of the script. This is not a post to criticize webmasters who wants to put a directory or have already a directory that have been put in and made live to the world.
So here are some advice for you if you are planning on creating a web directory.
1. Decide which script you want to your for your directory. Do you want to go free scripts? Paid Scripts? Or your create your own script?
2. Search Engine Friendly listing and pages is a big plus on SEO point of view. So check if your script can create such pages or listing.
3. Check for the requirements of the scripts, php version, mysql or database requirements, hosting capabilities. Otherwise if you don’t check this one, you may lead to problems on installing and running your directory.
4. As an amendment to the item 3, check hosting capabilities. Can it handle large amount of bandwith per day, uptime, support and other things to consider on host provider. or will you run your own host server.
5. Decide also whether your directory will be free to the world or will you make it a paid directory. Note that factors should come in for deciding this aspect. Going free can sometimes end up on spam submission, hosting fees survival and other things like support on the script (if free script) is limited. Going paid means, out of the pocket expenses, less spam (hopefully), and maintenance of the directory.
6. As amendment to item 5 regarding maintenance of the directory. Whether it is paid or free web directory, maintenance is important in the success of a directory. Don’t just accept all the submission, review them either you or your editors. Making sure your directory is working fine or problems are being solved at once. Upgrades and downtimes are being dealt. And other maintenance work should come out smooth.
7. Be ready that your time and effort will be eaten up by putting in a directory, approving links, deleting links, maintenance, emailing submitter about downtimes, upgrades and others.
8. Be ready to PROMOTE your directory. Putting it online and just sitting it there and announcing it once, does not end there. It must be promoted. Why? Think that your directory is not just a directory of crappy site, it is a directory of the quality sites where your visitors will see and your submitter trust their sites in. Well promoted directory means well managed and qualitative thus revenue is handy.
9. Don’t think on how much you will earn, but on how well your submitter and visitor will be satisfied.
10. In terms on money, try to think also on how much are you willing to spend on the directory.
This are just some advice and you can react and correct my post about it, I am not saying that you obey this, it is still up to you. This is just a guidelines before you create a web directory. I am willing to revise my pos, just leave a comment. You can also subscribe to my feed.
